The Wool Review: Coldpruf Men's Platinum Crew and Pants

The Coldpruf Platinum Crew and Pants are okay.  Our review showed them to be adequate for warmth and durability, but oversized compared to similar next to skin layers.  The fit is baggy (oversized) and uncomfortable if layered for a long period of wear.  We also found the sleeves to be cut too short to stay fully down the wrist.  The pants are comfortable, but not as a layered piece.  We feel that the posted pictures are misleading for the actual fit of the garment.  The wool is not as soft/comfortable as competitive items.  The price for the both the crew and top is very competitive-low.  Overall, you get what you pay for; a functional unremarkable base layer.

The Wool Review: Patagonia Men's Merino Air Crew

This is an incredibly warm and light base layer.  It was a cold day at Crater Lake with a modest wind.  The Patagonia Merino  Air felt comfortable and shockingly warm. The two reportable downsides are that the unconventional 'merino air' fabric has a foreign waffle feel, and that it is very expensive.  It appears to be durable, but the jury is out until is survives an entire season of real wear.  From a warmth, weight, and aesthetic point of view, this is a wonderful base layer, nearly living up to the considerable hype from Patagonia.  Overall, a highly recommended base layer with a steep price.

The Wool Review: Minus33 Isolation and Kancamagus

(Men's Isolation MidWeight (1/4 Zip) top and  Men's Kancamagus mid-weight bottoms.)

In our review of the best merino wool base layer, we acknowledge that The Wool Review community is partial to a technical and well-fitting base layer gear.  In today's review, we were disappointed in the fit and performance of the Minus 33 base layer.  The feel of the top and bottom were above average, but the fit of both pieces was loose and became uncomfortable when layered.  The Isolation mid-weight top has a loose fit, more consistent with leisure wear than hiking.  The Kancamagus bottoms were loose fitting around the crotch, thighs, and knees-but tight around the ankles.
